Origin & Heritage
-
Crafted in Arani (also spelled Arni) in Thiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, famously known as the “Silk City” of Arani. Arani silk sarees have been recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag since 2008.
-
Silk weaving in Arani dates back centuries, flourishing under Chola dynasty patronage. The craft was shaped by the Saurashtrian weaving community, who settled in the region during the Vijayanagara period.
-
These sarees are lightweight, soft, durable, and low-maintenance. Traditional dobby weaving has evolved into jacquard technology, allowing motifs like plus putta, kottadi checks, temple designs, mango and peacock motifs, with contrasting borders on both sides.
